David Byrne's Bicycle Diaries Audiobook

What doesn’t David Byrne do? Byrne is a renowned multi-media artist who found success as a vocalist/guitarist with the band Talking Heads and has taken on the roles of solo musician, composer, writer, filmmaker and record label founder.

What’s next for Byrne? Pilot? Plumber? Not quite: add avid cyclist and travel writer to this extensive and impressive resume. In 2009, Byrne wrote The Bicycle Diaries and has released an audiobook version that takes Byrne’s travel observations to a whole new level. The eight-plus-hour audiobook is filled with keen insights into Australia, New York, London, San Francisco, Manila, Buenos Aires and some American cities.

In one chapter, Byrne shows his appreciation for Australia’s people, culture and cuisine. By cycling, Bryne sees what few others see. “The first time I went to Australia in the early 1980s, I found it repulsive. However, after a few more visits, I began to like Australia,” Byrne recalls. “There are bikes paths along the rivers. More are being added yearly.” Those words are inspiring as this country becomes more bike-friendly. In his Aussie travels, Byrne cries at an ant mound that’s in the shadow of a crummy cement motel. He drinks beer in Aborigine country. He discovers incredible art work.

“Sydney, what a weird and gorgeous city,” Byrne laments under the sounds of birds, conjuring up images of a local park he describes in the city. These location sounds coupled with amazing music make this audiobook stand out among its competitors. Byrne describes this project as a cross between a podcast and radio show, but I confess that with his astounding writing, this is more like a great travel film without the visuals.

All chapters to The Bicycle Diaries may be downloaded separately. Byrne himself recently said that the book can be consumed in any order and the buyer doesn’t have to purchase the entire audiobook.

As a fellow cyclist, I appreciate this audiobook which raises awareness that communities across the world need to step up bike lane building efforts. It’s a win-win situation for public health, the environment and economy. It’s also a great gift idea.

The audiobook is available as a podcast-style download at bicycle-diaries.com with chapters available for purchase individually. MT -Robert J. Nebel
