Several years ago, I wrote a feature about winemaking in North Georgia. Little did I realize how far wine production has come since those early days. I recently saw this growth on my last trip to North Georgia Wine Country at Persimmon Creek Vineyards. This sprawling Rabun County operation is run by Sonny and Mary Ann Hardman who founded the vineyards in 2000. Set on 110 acres, Persimmon Creek Vineyards produces some of Georgia’s most inviting wines including Seyval Blanc, Merlot, Ice Wine, Cabernet Franc and Riesling.
“I think we’re one of the few who are putting out Riesling,” Sonny observed, as he was touring me and a group of writers throughout the property.

At the time of my visit, grapes were bursting out all over. From the bright green hues of the Riesling and Seyval Blanc grapes to the deep rich tones of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, wine making seems to be thriving at Persimmon Creek.
From there, we sampled these delicious varieties in the cellar of Sonny and Mary Ann’s solar-powered home. This environmentally conscious wine production facility operates well with modern solar panels that sit atop the home. While they are backed-up on the local power grid and generators, Sonny said that they have done well on solar.

“In fact, we sold back power to the grid,” Sonny proudly exclaimed as he poured us more samples.
From the tasting room, Mary Ann led us to where they keep farm animals including a flock of sheep and a 550-pound pig that was ready for the processing plant – to put it gently.

“We just love her,” Mary Ann said, while gazing at her. “But, she’s ready.”
The ambitious winemaking couple took us up to the part of Persimmon Creek where they built handsome cottages.
“Every time people visited us, they asked where they should stay,” Sonny recalled. “We would direct them to nearby places, but they were still a drive from here. So that’s why we built our own cottages.”
Nestled in the woods, these cozy cottages feature state-of-the-art kitchens, spacious bedrooms, bathrooms and wide front porches. This is a perfect romantic or couples getaway.

North Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains have always inspired me to make return trips. Every time I’m in the area I have to check out Brasstown Valley Resort. This is an amazing property that offers first-rate lodging, premier golfing, swimming, horseback riding and an incredible brand-new spa.
No matter where you are in the Lodge at Brasstown, you are treated to spectacular views of the mountains. When the sun is setting or the fog is settling, the view becomes even more special. The moment you enter the lodge’s lobby, you are entranced by its rustic motif and the smell of the fireplace.
Each of the 134 rooms, suites and cottages at Brasstown continues that rustic theme. The Lodge’s rooms feature fireplaces or balconies. The eight cottages have guest rooms, kitchenettes and a grand parlor featuring a wood burning fireplace.
Fine dining at Brasstown
It’s no secret that guests can eat well at Brasstown Valley Resort. From their large, diverse breakfast buffets to excellent lunches at the property’s 19th Hole restaurant, Brasstown delivers. Dinner in The Dining Room at the Lodge is amazing. Chef Sid Kurrimbukus, a native of Mauritius, oversees a kitchen that offers some of the most original, delectable appetizers, entrees and desserts in North Georgia.
When I dined at The Dining Room, I was joined by Eric Seifarth of nearby Crane Creek Vineyards. Eric expertly paired his fine wines with the meal. The highlight of the evening was getting the opportunity to sample Seifrath’s Seyval Blanc, a winner in my opinion.
Our multi-course meal was excellent. The standout was the Bacon-Wrapped Filet, a juicy, well-seasoned entrée.
Further spoiling
The pampering continues at Brasstown. Just across the property is the Equani Spa. Housed in what was once a Native American museum, the Equani Spa offers a range of expert spa services including basic massages, hydrotherapy, facials and body masque rituals. With soothing treatment rooms and a cozy lounge, Equani Spa is one of the best – if not the best – spas that I have visited.
After being spoiled at the spa, I was ready to head back to the big city. Knowing that I was fully relaxed, I was ready to take on any of the challenges that Atlanta was to throw my way. But, I know in the back of my mind, I’ll have to head back here soon.
