Behind The Scenes in Charleston
Words and Photos: By Robert J. Nebel

They are the backbone of what makes Charleston, South Carolina the well-oiled machine that it is today. Chefs, servers, caterers, bellhops, parking lot attendants, hotel clerks, taxi drivers, public transportation workers, carriage ride operators and law enforcement officers are just a few of the hard-working men and women who are responsible for The Holy City’s success.

When we travel to our destinations in search of distinctive cuisine, lodging and attractions, we seldom think about those who work behind the scenes. In most places, it’s an afterthought.

Somehow, Charleston’s friendly workers blend in with the scene. It isn’t too hard to stop and think about how a wired-up Bubba Gump host scrambles each day to seat his guests. Then there’s the well-dressed waiter at Tristan restaurant expertly delivers a mélange of duck breast, wine and handsomely-displayed desserts.

Speaking of sweets, it’s a treat to watch candy being produced at River Street Sweets. This bustling hole-in-the-wall features some of the finest chocolates, fudges and even pies and cakes.

Mayor Joe Riley addresses a group about Charleston's success

Whether it’s a sweltering July day or a chilly January night, these professionals bring “Chuck Town” to life in this well-preserved Southern coastal metropolis. Beyond the commitment of the employees, it’s the dedication that Charleston has to its tourism. Its leaders past and present felt the need to tap into this vision. No one knows this ideal better than Mayor Joe Riley who saw to it that The Holy City offers up exceptional offerings to its guests. City leaders past and present knew how to tap into the local talent and use it to its full potential. Today, Charleston attracts and retains talent ranging from top chefs to musicians.

Strolling along its historic streets, one cannot help but notice the intensity emanating from those who are working in the restaurants, shops, cafes and at The Market in the downtown area.

Once you’re here, you just wish to ditch your car and browse the shops and galleries including Croghan’s Jewel Box and Charles II Art Gallery. You can literally eat for days on end at places like Grill 225, Hyman’s Seafood Market, Oak Steakhouse, High Cotton and Magnolias. The lists seem endless.

Caterers take time out from their hectic lives.

If you’re going to stay here, do it in class. The Mills House is certainly at the top of the list since Former President George H.W. Bush lodged here. The Mills House offers all of today’s amenities in this traditionally appointed structure on the city’s legendary Meeting Street. Its grand lobby, 200-plus rooms, business center and meeting space, make the Mills House a world-class property. The Wentworth Mansion, French Quarter Inn and Battery Inc. are just a few of the other classic-designed hotel/bed and breakfasts that make guests feel more than at home.

Charleston, South Carolina: Hard working and dedicated people are throughout the area. There’s a spirit here like no other.
