Also, in December the hotel announced continued efforts to be an environmentally conscious property by becoming certified under the Florida Green Lodging Program.  To become a designated member of the Florida Green Lodging Program, hotels must implement a variety of green practices.  At the Radisson Hotel Jacksonville Butler Boulevard, these practices include water conservation, a linen reuse program, high-energy efficient lighting and programmable thermostats. The hotel also reduces waste by providing the opportunity to recycle, purchasing items in bulk, purchasing post-consumer-recycled materials and recycling ink and toner cartridges.  In addition, the hotel uses green cleaners and high-efficiency air filters. www.radisson.com/jacksonvillefl_butler

Ski Beech at Beech Mountain Resort enters its fifth decade with a variety of improvements and new options for winter sports enthusiasts.

The resort has added a new tubing park, a second terrain park, new quad chairs on the Oz lift, two new grooming machines, and 56 high-tech snow guns. Additionally, all reservoir lakes have been dredged to push the mountain’s water capacity to eight million gallons.
The end result, says new director of operations Ryan Costin, will be a vastly improved experience for visitors to Ski Beech and Beech Mountain Resort.
“We’re really making an effort to win back their business and make this a place they want to visit,” said Costin. “A plan is in motion to upgrade the resort for the long haul. Folks will see positive changes this year and in years to come.”
Ryan Costin and his brother, Jack, represent the third generation of the Costin family at Beech Mountain Resort. Their father, John, is president, while their grandfather, Ray, has owned the operation since 1985.
Ryan Costin studied ski resort management at Western State College in Colorado, and he is using that knowledge to spearhead improvements at Beech. He has centralized and streamlined the check-in process for skiers, and placed an emphasis on customer service.
“Although we’ve invested a lot in capital improvements, one thing everybody will notice is our push to improve customer service. It will be at a higher standard than in years past,” Costin said. “All lift operators will wear uniforms for the first time in a few years. And our staff will be focused on helping people on the hill, and off the hill.”
Skiers should also notice the addition of the two new grooming machines for the slopes.
“It is extremely important to be able to maintain the snow quality, especially in the South where you get the constant change of temperatures,” Costin said.
The resort’s director of marketing, Gil Adams, is pleased with what’s taking place.
“To me, the most important thing that is new is a new philosophy,” said Adams. “Everybody in management now is an avid skier and they’re breathing new life into this place.”
Ski Beech at Beech Mountain Resort opened for the season Nov. 22, marking just the second time since 2000 it has opened prior to Thanksgiving.

A TIME FOR GIVING BACK:
Boundless Journeys Announces Annual Charity Event For 2009

December 1, 2008 ― STOWE, VERMONT  Award-winning tour company, Boundless Journeys (www.boundlessjourneys.com), is offering its August 2-9, 2009 Peru: The Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu trip as a special charity event to benefit the Instituto Machu Picchu (IMAPI; www.imapi.org.pe/english/index.htm) and a community school in the village of Huanca. This 2009 event follows the company's successful 2008 event, a Tanzanian safari benefitting the Foundation for African Medicine and Education (FAME; www.fameafrica.org). The 2008 charity event trip resulted in a donation of $6,000 to FAME and the participation of 10 Boundless Journeys clients in a well-child check at a Karatu, Tanzania orphanage.

Founded in 1999 by Alfredo Ferreyros, IMAPI is a natural extension of the philosophies and practices that made him a 2007 winner of the Adventure Travel Trade Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. A Peruvian nonprofit association dedicated to the conservation of natural and cultural resources in the Machu Picchu Sanctuary and Cusco region, IMAPI's primary goal is to promote and execute projects related to the sustainable development of tourism, agriculture, cottage industries, education, and scientific research.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of people visit Peru and its iconic archeological site, Machu Picchu. Peru is truly one of the world's great travel destinations, but very few visitors actually get off the beaten path and truly connect with the people and places they are there to experience. As Karen Cleary, Peru Trip Manager for Boundless Journeys notes "It is part of Boundless Journeys' mission to plan an annual charity event trip as one aspect of our commitment to sustainable tourism. The Huanca community school is in need of renovation and restoration. Our donation to the project of approximately $4,900 USD, plus the time our guests will spend working, will allow the community to accomplish this important goal."

Along with the popular walking and hiking tour including important sites in the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, Boundless Journeys guests who participate in the August 2-9 charity event will have the opportunity to:

•    Spend a day working side by side with Huanca villagers, assisting electricians, carpenters, painters, and masons to complete the community school renovation project (no construction experience is necessary, just a desire to help out and a willingness to get a little dirt under your nails).
•    Spend the night camping in the Huanca community, giving participants time to get to know the villagers better, and enjoying a traditional party to celebrate the completion of the project.

Group size is limited to 16, and reservations are currently being taken for Boundless Journeys' Peru: The Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu charity event. The August 2-9, 2009 trip cost is $4295 per person (not including international airfare).

CONTEXT LAUNCHES TRIPS

Leading walking tour company moves into the packaged tour business with thematic, small-group trips led by scholars; 2 ½-day “mini trips” define new category.

Context, the network of scholars who lead critically acclaimed walking tours in New York and several European cities, announce the launch of 2 ½- and 8-day packaged tours to Rome, Naples, Florence, Venice, London, Paris, Sicily and Istanbul. The first trips will run in April, 2009.

As with their daily walking seminars in cities around the world, Context will strictly limit group size on each trip to no more than six or eight people. Instead of relying on a single trip leader, Context will apply its model of scholar-led walking seminars to these packages:  Groups will be passed from expert to expert throughout the trip depending on the specific site, museum, or topic in order to take advantage of the specialized, in-depth knowledge contained within the Context network.

“The trips program was born out of a desire to offer longer, in-depth itineraries to intellectually curious travelers who want go beyond the superficiality of packaged tourism and come away with a deeper experience of place,” says Katie Parla, a culinary historian and long-time Context docent in Rome who has been tapped to organize and oversee the entire Context Trips program. “As well, our small groups allow us to provide a hands-on, intimate experience and to gain special access to places not traditionally open to the public.”

In April, Context will launch the following 8-day trips:

A Taste of Two Cities, the Food Cultures of Rome and Naples, featuring programs on the cuisine of ancient and Renaissance-era Rome and Naples; cooking lessons, market walks, and annotated meals, all led by internationally known food writers, trained chefs, and key figures in the discipline of culinary history.

Across Disciplines: Florence and the Renaissance Ideal, in which a collection of scholars looks at the Renaissance through an interdisciplinary lens, considering the role of painting, architecture, poetry, theology and science in that most influential of periods.

Mediterranean Palimpsest: Sicily Through History delves deep into the art, architecture, wine, and food of the Mediterranean’s largest island, tracing the impact of three millennia of conquest in Sicily.

Context is also introducing a series of 2 ½-day “mini trips” in each of its cities, weaving together walking seminars on such topics as art history, archaeology, cuisine, and architecture into an in-depth orientation. The company will launch these in April in Paris, Rome, Naples, Florence, Venice, and Istanbul.

“The mini trip is a ‘category buster,’” notes Context founder Paul Bennett. “Because we have a network of over 180 scholars and experts across these cities and are running walking seminars on a great range of topics every day, we’re able to offer an entirely new way for people to take a packaged tour. At only two and a half days, it can work as a base from which independent travelers get started in country and also as an add-on for a participants on a longer group tour.”

Each mini trip begins in the late afternoon on day one with an orientation walk and welcome dinner. The following two days focus on key features of each city, mixing together visits to important, well-known sites with more unusual, surprising thematic walks.

Visit Context Travel for more information.

I could never quite understand how skiers and golfers could check their equipment for free. My lightweight bike, windsurf and surf boards have always been charged a $75 fee each way. Forget about the good old days, fees for skis are here and they're here to stay. Over the past year, the troubled airline industry has been looking for ways to increase revenues, leading them to start charging for every service they can think of; meals, snacks, curbside check-in, etc. You name it, you pay for it. We knew it would come and it has now arrived.

With the cost of ski and snowboard equipment going up, skiers have debated
whether to buy, lease or rent. With the escalating fee for each bag
checked, it now makes more sense than ever to rent. If you can't fit your
ski boots in your suitcase with your ski and street apparel, you will end up
with at least three bags; one for clothes, another for skis/snowboard and a third for ski boots. The first bag will cost between $15 and $25 each way,
the second bag will cost between $25 and $50 and the third bag will cost
between $100 and $125. (See fee chart below).

Don't worry about renting; it isn't like it used to be. New in-room fitting
services are the thing to do now. No more trips to the overcrowded, dark
and smelly rental shop. Instead of wasting time standing in line, companies like industry leading Ski Butlers (877-754-7754, www.skibutlers.com) will
come to your accommodations. While in the comfort of your lodging, Ski
Butlers will fit you for all of your equipment needs. With extended hours of
operation, you can be fitted at your convenience from early morning (7 a.m.)
to as late as 9 p.m., seven days a week. "It's hassle-free," explained Bryn Carey, President of Ski Butlers. "Ski Butlers is in the business of making it easy to rent. We are focused on customer service," he added. "Our goal is to take the stress out of renting skis and boards in addition to all of the hassles associated with going to a rental shop; standing in line, and lugging all of the equipment back to your lodging, especially if you have kids."

Let's look at the numbers. The cost of buying new high performance skis and
boots at a ski shop is between $1100 to $1500. The one way cost of checking
three bags (clothing, boots and skis) is between $140 and $160. While
flying on Delta Airlines, the round trip cost will skyrocket to $320. The
cost of renting top performance demo equipment for four days is $236, so it
makes sense to rent. Under this scenario you could rent for five to seven years if you ski or ride only a few times per year for about the same price as buying or paying baggage fees. Plus, you will have the latest and
greatest equipment on the market and less hassles.

Ski Butlers is an innovative leader in the ski rental delivery business.
Carey emphasizes the fact that this is a high quality service without a big
price tag. Leaving your ski equipment at home is cost effective in this new age of baggage fees.

Ski Butlers features high quality equipment from industry leaders Rossignol,Volkl, Roxy, Head, Fischer, and Elan. As a full service rental operation, Ski Butlers also rents helmets, boot dryers, and 2-way radios. If you forget your sunscreen, sunglasses or lip balm, Ski Butlers offers these items for sale in addition to a nice selection of gloves, hats, goggles and hand warmers.

Ski Butlers provides the newest ski and snowboard equipment on the market so
there is no need to worry about these new fees that have been implemented by
the airlines. At a fraction of the cost, Ski Butlers provides a wonderful
opportunity for skiers in an easy and convenient way. Give it a try.

THE RITZ-CARLTON HOTEL COMPANY, L.L.C. INTRODUCES

RITZ-CARLTON RESERVE, A NEW COLLECTION OF RESORT EXPERIENCES

Phulay Bay in Thailand to open as first location

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. is launching a new exclusive brand extension for the most discerning global travelers; Ritz-Carlton Reserve. Phulay Bay in Krabi, Thailand will be the first property to open in 2009. As of today, guests can visit a dedicated website at

Ritz-Carlton Reserve

These unique resorts have been designed for those who seek to escape the stresses of everyday life by retreating to experience new cultures and adventures.

Each exquisite destination will feature signature, one-of-a-kind low density resorts situated in choice settings, each with a distinctive personality and sense of place. Future development will be limited to select corners of the globe with upcoming locations to include Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Turks & Caicos and The United Arab Emirates.

"The entire Ritz-Carlton Reserve portfolio of idyllic retreats will offer guests a contemporary interpretation of the local lifestyle and culture. The concept is simple and yet exudes style and luxurious levels of comfort. The resorts provide a complete escape to the unexpected; a private, exclusive leisure experience that blends unique elements of the local culture, history, and heritage with intuitive individual service, exquisite indigenous design, casual ambiance, and respect for the surrounding environment," said Simon Cooper, president and chief operating officer, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. "We do not work to one design mold, but rather allow the creative process to be destination and customer focused. Each Ritz-Carlton Reserve property around the globe will personify a unique design befitting of its locale."

The architectural design philosophy is to create low-rise suites and villas that boast private panoramic views of serene oceans, tropical gardens or desert landscapes. The four natural elements are represented in the design: Fire to create romantic interiors, Water in bathing sanctuaries, Air in creative spaces for contemplation and reflection and Earth with the discreet treatment of technology that can be utilized or ignored.

The visionary design allows guests to experience a completely secluded environment, with as much or as little contact with the rest of humanity as they choose. Tranquil spa treatments, candlelit dining and a refreshing dip in the water can be done in the privacy of a villa or suite, or within the intimate settings of the resort facilities. The indigenous décor will be reflected in guestrooms and public spaces, with the finest quality furniture, finishes, artwork and detailed touches. Expansive villas and suites may feature personal plunge pools, outdoor rainforest showers or baths and private verandahs. Coupled with individualized service by a personal concierge to provide assistance that is unobtrusive yet intuitive, felt but not seen, invisible yet apparent.

The launch of Ritz-Carlton Reserve sees the beginning of a journey to the most captivating corners of the world, abounding with extraordinary possibilities and attention. A voyage of discovery steeped in luxury and limited only by ones imagination.

Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Nestled on the shore of the Andaman Sea, the exclusive resort is the vision of in-demand Thai architect Lek Bunnag and features modern styling and architecture with accents of Thai culture and design.

The architecture, landscape, interiors and accessories fuse to create a marriage of style and design that is completely in keeping with and tied to the natural environment of the location. Oversized beds, pillows, chairs, baths and doorways create a sense of comfort and welcoming that sets the guest at ease and welcomes them into the resort.

Combining contemporary Thai styling in the buildings with preservation of the environment, the natural flora of existing trees and plants relies on the past and tradition to create something sustainable today and for the future. The use of traditional Lanna art forms both in architectural structure and design as well as paintings and artworks on the walls and doors of the villas further create a contemporary setting that draws on tradition to offer a unique and luxurious environment and further enlivens the senses.

With accommodations that offer unspoiled ocean views, private plunge pools, sheltered outdoor baths and showers set among lush indigenous flora, the sense of privacy and comfort allows guests to indulge in the scenery and detach from the world during their stay. Coupled with the natural warmth and easy smiles of the Thai people and the legendary Ritz-Carlton service, Phulay Bay is the perfect destination to host the first of Ritz-Carlton Reserve’s exotic, hand-picked hideaways.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. of Chevy Chase, Md. operates 72 hotels in the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Over 30 projects are under development around the globe including future Ritz-Carlton Reserve openings Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Turks & Caicos and in The United Arab Emirates.
